XBMC was almost 9 years ago, the name has change to Kodi ever since.
Metadata is coming through via so-called scrapers, which means you’ll first need to set up Kodi for your video and/or music sources.
DLNA is purely about the media files themselves and not about fanart, posters or people involved in those media files.

Kodi is open-source, just fork it in Github, and do your thing.

Module level, as in https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc (some great reading!)

No, I’ll start from scratch rather than fork. I like what the scrapers are doing. For example, I see they are hitting musicbrainz’s /ws2 JSON interface and (possibly) retrieving more data than what the file metadata offers. I like that. alot. Existing metadata is too limited https://picard-docs.musicbrainz.org/en/a. pping.html

There was a thesis I read a few years ago on the taxonomy of music genres and how it tied them all together. I intend to implement that in my DLNA media server as an experiment for adapting that into a folder view that can traverse in circles while applying weighted relationships. I only see half the logic thus far, so it’ll be to my advantage if I stay in a scripting language.

Thanks for the help

In this video I will show you how to enable DLNA Kodi and talk you through the Kodi media server setup. With UPnP & DLNA you can stream content from your main Kodi device to any other system in your home. Full written instructions on how enable DLNA Kodi and the Kodi media server setup process can found at the following link: http://homemediaportal.com/enable-kodi-dlna-kodi-media-server/ . The link will talk you through how to setup your HTPC as a Kodi UPnP server. This guide video focuses on the Kodi UPnP / DLNA setup on your main system and the client side is left to you. As all DLNA receivers are different I could not include this in the video. The principles are the same however. Ensure that the devices are on the same network Enable DLNA Kodi and then open up a DLNA receiver on a device you want to watch your movies and listen to music on. There is just a single setting you need to switch on to enable DLNA Kodi. It will take you approximately 3 minutes to complete the Kodi media server setup and you can be up and running enjoying your content. A Kodi UPnP server is designed to be plug and play and therefore minimal configuration is required. Feel free to use this Kodi media server setup video in its entirety on your own sites. Kodi как dlna сервер

If you only want the pure folder view from a UPnP/DLNA server, then Kodi is perhaps not the best choice. Kodi offers videos and music metadata only through its scraped libraries.

You could also use something like «MiniDLNA Server (ReadyMedia», although I don’t know how much of a full operating system OSMC is. Alternatively, install Ubuntu Mate on your RPi (2/3?)device, and then install minidlna. Setting it up is pretty simple for video, audio and photos.

UPnP/DLNA on Kodi is a by-product, it is not is main feature.
