Не монтируются харды. Unable to mount location. Linux mint 14

[SOLVED] «Unable to mount location — can’t mount file»
Post by wrahim » Sun Jun 08, 2014 10:17 am
I have tried to fix this on my own by looking for information online, but I would like to solve this without losing all my data from my 1 TB external harddrive.
Problem: upon connecting external hdd, you can hear the usb device connect sound. However trying to get inside it results in «Unable to mount location — can’t mount file» error.
I have not done much, but when in terminal these are the results of the following commands:
wrahim@LExa02 ~ $ sudo fdisk -l [sudo] password for wrahim: Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders, total 234441648 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x0005e980 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 2048 217890815 108944384 83 Linux /dev/sda2 217892862 234440703 8273921 5 Extended /dev/sda5 217892864 234440703 8273920 82 Linux swap / Solaris Disk /dev/sdb: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes 81 heads, 63 sectors/track, 382818 cylinders, total 1953525168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x000098ec Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 2048 1953525167 976761560 83 Linux
Trying to mount in terminal:
wrahim@LExa02 ~ $ mount /dev/sdb1/ mount: can't find /dev/sdb1/ in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
Does this have anything to do with the fact that both disks (my primary internal 120GB ssd and the external 1TB) have the same Id (/dev/sda1/ and /dev/sdb1 have the same Id)?
I have seen one solution to a very similar problem, but the person ended up using gparted to format the drive. I can NOT do this, I have too much data, that I am not willing to let go of yet. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Shouldn’t it read as /dev/sda or /sda1, /sdb etc and not /sdf1.
How many drives have you on your system. In Terminal enter the following command and post back the results..
This will list all your drives and the partitions.
inxi -D
To list all drives and devices use the following..
inxi -Dd

Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon
Cinnamon Version 4.2.4
My PC was custom made. It has Ryzen 7 CPU and B450 Gaming Plus motherboard.
Just to add. This hardrive was working before but I had to get the motherboard replaced and now its not mounting.

Yes, but now I can’t see sdf1
In terminal enter the following command, then copy the whole text and post it back here. Then Ctrl+x to exit out.
sudo nano /etc/fstab, enter your password.
This will show me which drive is mounted and which is not.

You haven’t gotten all the info.
Those external drives can you disconnect those so it only leaves your internal sata connected drives, then reboot.
Go to terminal expand to nearly 100% then copy and paste the following.
sudo nano /etc/fstab
You will need to copy the entire result of fstab and paste it between the brackets. Above your text window you will see a host of buttons, select the >button and post the results of the fstab between those brackets please. This needs to be done so I can see all the entries in fstab. Doing it the way you did above is no good as there is missing information.

Hopefully I did it right this time. I dont know why the external drive is still showing up when I already uplugged it and reboot.

Hmmm..I’m no expert on this, but it seems to me that when you replaced your motherboard and reconnected everything it’s caused some problems. This is my suggestion..
I would disconnect all external drives, backup any files that you need or want and re-install mint. Ensure you don’t connect any usb drives until after you have installed and got mint up and running.
We should be able to diagnose any problems that may occur afterwards. Once mint is installed I would connect the Hitachi drive first and see if it get recognised, then check the results, if it works then do each other driver until everything is working to your specs.

Would it be possible to access files in the drive without mounting it?

The usb drive you should have np accessing it. Mounting a drive is required when you want a drive to load when you boot up and that is done by editing your fstab file. But be warned if trying to do that if you put in a wrong entry you can cause boot up problems. I made a mistake by putting in an extra letter in the fstab and in turn that made my system useless which made me re install everything. If unsure what to do with fstab entries use google or put a post up. I sought help with loading my other 2 internal drives on boot up and received it quickly. Personally I wouldn’t load a usb drive on boot up, I feel it is pointless. That’s what internal drives are for. But that’s just my opinion. I have 2 1tb external usb drives full of games and applications, movies, pix, songs etc, so if I want to access any file I just connect the drive to the computer.

The first thing I would do is unplug and replug the sata cable to that drive (both ends, drive and motherboard) and see if it works.
The second thing I would do is plug the sata cable into a different sata slot on the motherboard. If you haven’t got the user manual for your motherboard, google.
Do you have a spare sata cable, just in case it’s the cable?
- Run gparted and post a screen shot for that drive (you can select the drive from the drop down top right in the gparted window). If you do that also goto the menu view > device information (gives us more info in a panel in the left of the gparted screen). Note — if you unplug some of your usb drives, your problem drive will no longer be sdf — you need to spot it by the name and drive size.
- In a terminal run sudo parted -l note that is a lowercase L and post the output.

I’d also like to add that sudo is not necessary with nano etc. for viewing these system files unless you do intend to edit them. They will open as non-writeable, avoiding the chance of an accidental edit.
Tip: There are easier ways to list such file contents as well e.g. cat /etc/fstab .

Thanks! This solved my problem!
The boot time of my system was even affected. I thought I had to reinstall everything.
I didnt realize a simple SATA cable can cause so much problems.

I can access OMV6 from my Win11 box no problem but can’t access it from my Linux Mint box. Sorry about that. I was talking about Samba shares. I notice in omv6. under Users, gary, the password i initially entered there does not show up any more. Under OMV5 it does. I wonder if it’s a password issue preventing me from accessing the server from my Linux box. It certainly is working fine when i access it from Windows. I’ve copied almost a terabyte of data from omb5 to omb6 without a hitch using Total Commander under Windows.. I just can’t gain access to the server from Linux. Very frustrating. I’ve been trying to find the answer to my problem for days now.

On entering ‘sudo apt install cifs-utils’ i already have the latest version. And now i can’t access omv6 from my Windows box, although i could yesterday. It is complaining about wrong credentials. But i have no problem accessing omv5, from both my Mint box and my Windows box.. I certainly don’t want to disconnect omv5 before i’m sure omv6 is working properly. I have nothing under /media/gary. It’s an empty folder.

If you have that on Mint then you should not get this message -> Failed to retrieve share list from server: Invalid argument

`All 3, Win, Mint, and OMB are on the workgroup WORKGROUP. I’m wondering if this has anything to do with 2.5G. I have that speed on all three of the connected machines and am using it. Under File Systems both ssds show as being mounted and referenced. Status for both is Online. Under Shared Folders my Data ssd, when i edit that line show Everyone: read/write under Tags. I have nothing under Tags for my other ssd, Music. I don’t know if that helps any in you guys diagnosing my problem. SMB/CIFS shares show both as Guests allowed under Public. Both have a check mark under Browseable. I don’t know what else to say. I’m now in the process of reinstalling omv6. I’m being asked about a domanin name. The default, as i’m sure you know is local. Should i change that. It says make sure you use the same domain name on all computers. How do i even do that? Please help. Please. I’m at my wit’s end.

There is no mounting in your fstab and you haven’t shown us your mount command in Linux Mint. No mounting, no access.
How do you want to reach the connection?
And again, NFS is easier. Please think about it.
I can’t do that now. I tried reinstalling omv6 and as i’m trying to set everything up again i am now getting the message «404 — Not found. The method ‘enumerate’ does not exist for the RPC service ‘Exec'». And now i still see the two drives under Disks. That’s good. But under File Systems, upon hitting the + sign to create and mount my file systems it just shows a blank rectangle. I’m guessing it might have something to do with the aforementioned RPC message. So i tried reinstalling it AGAIN and i still got the 404 message. Would formatting my boot drive get rid of that message? I definitely can’t get it set up the way it is now. Before this latest problem with ‘404’ i did try to install NFS but i got confused and didn’t know how to configure it.
It just seems to get worse. In my attempt to get rid of the 404 error i swapped out my boot drive with another ssd. Reinstalled omv6 now for about the 5th or 6th time. And, no, the 404 error message did not go away. Where is it coming from? I still see my boot drive and my two data disks but i still can’t create and mount a file system. When i click on the + sign, well i explained this earlier. I’ll just include a screen shot. And here’s my mount.

I obviously don’t understand the concept of mounting drives. I see nothing in my fstab relating to accessing my omv5. And yet i have no problem accessing it, seemingly without having to mount those drives. So do i need a mount command to access omv6? I guess so, seeing as how i was told no mounting no access. Also i have set up NFS and now accessing it i again get ‘Unable to mount location Permission denied: Perhaps this host is disallowed or a privileged port is needed’. So obviously i’m a noob here. Can you walk me through how to mount the omv6 drives. I thought i had read that it was unwise to edit the fstab file directly. Is that true? So i guess i should create a folder where my omv6 files will be mounted. I’m not sure of the command. I see a lot of confusing info when i google the topic. And, btw, i can now once again copy files, on my Windows box, from my omv5 box to my omv6 box. And when i copy files from omv6 to my NVMe Window boot drive i get 285 MB/sec. Woo hoo. Thank you ssds and 2.5g lan all around.
